Beyond the Dichotomy: A Proposed Integrated Model for Translation Quality Assessment

Translation quality assessment is regarded as one of the branches that still entertain a quite argumentative platform in the field of translation studies. Such a debate can be justified by different reasons, including that translation errors are not on a clear-cut scale like any other type of error. The other reason is the subjective nature of translation evaluation, as determining what is a good translation can differ depending on the view of the instructor. In order to solve this issue, different models and methods on how translation quality assessment should be conducted were proposed by different theorists and researchers. This study attempts to combine two methods of translation quality assessment, Hurtado Albir's (1995) error analysis-based method and Waddington’s (2001) holistic method of assessment, and investigate how each method contributes to reducing subjectivity of assessment in order to integrate the strong points of each method and develop an integrated method in the middle ground of this dichotomy.
