Study of the Performance of Bread Wheat Cultivar (Buhuth 210) under the Conditions of Al-Bayda – Al-Jabal Al-Akhdar – Libya

Abstract

A field experiment was conducted at the farm of the Department of Crops, Faculty of Agriculture, Omar Al-Mukhtar University, during the 2023/2024 agricultural season. The study aimed to evaluate the performance of the bread wheat cultivar “Buhuth 210,” developed by the Agricultural Research Center station in Misrata, under the environmental and rain-fed conditions of Al-Bayda region in Al-Jabal Al-Akhdar.

The experiment was carried out by planting 12 experimental units, randomly distributed on November 17, 2023. Each experimental unit measured 2 × 2 m² and was divided into 12 planting rows. The crop was irrigated once after emergence. Periodic data and measurements were collected through two samples: the first on February 22, 2024, and the second on March 6, 2024. The crop was then harvested on June 9, 2024, to evaluate yield characteristics and yield components. Representative soil samples were also collected from the experimental site before planting at a depth of 0–30 cm to determine the physical, chemical, and fertility properties of the soil.

The results of yield traits and vegetative growth showed a distinguished response of the cultivar. The average absolute growth rate reached 0.192903 g/day, the average relative growth rate was 0.07529 g/g/day, and the average leaf area index was 0.970618. Regarding yield components, the cultivar recorded an average biological weight of 343.9143 g and an average grain weight of 202.425 g. The average spike length was 10.56333 cm, while the average spike weight was 0.792867 g. The average number of spikelets per spike reached 12.38333, and the average number of grains per spike was 13.41667. The average grain weight per spike was 0.881108 g, and the average grain filling rate was 0.243916 g.

These results showed a high degree of similarity with the measurements recorded for the same cultivar in its region of origin in Misrata. The study confirms the success and suitability of cultivating the bread wheat cultivar “Buhuth 210” in Al-Jabal Al-Akhdar region, as the cultivar demonstrated high productive efficiency and a remarkable ability for genetic and environmental adaptation under local conditions.
