Evaluation of Medical Waste Management at Missllata Central Hospital

Healthcare institutions play a major role in improving the level of health services provided to the community. However, with the advancement of science and technology, medical waste has become a significant source of risk to both the environment and human health. The aim of this study is to identify the methods of medical waste management and the safe disposal practices applied at Misrata Central Hospital.
This study adopted the descriptive analytical approach, and questionnaires were used as tools for data collection from hospital staff in order to assess the current situation and propose appropriate solutions to this problem. The results of the study indicated that medical waste management practices at Misrata Central Hospital conform, in many cases, to local and international standards.
The study also revealed that the hospital’s waste incinerator is not operating effectively. Accordingly, the study recommended increasing staff awareness of the risks associated with medical waste. It also emphasized the necessity of carrying out proper maintenance of the incinerator, in addition to providing the materials and equipment required for effective medical waste management.
