The American–Israeli–Iranian War and the Restructuring of the International System: A Study of the Geopolitical Implications for Libya

This study examines the structural transformations taking place within the international system in light of the U.S.–Israeli–Iranian war, and the implications of these transformations for reshaping Libya’s geopolitical position within the Mediterranean–African sphere. The study is based on a central assumption that this conflict is no longer merely a regional confrontation associated with the Iranian nuclear program or the security balances in the Middle East; rather, it has become an expression of the transition of the international system from a unipolar order toward more complex patterns of multipolarity and geopolitical competition among major powers. The study adopts a multi-level analytical approach combining international system analysis, geopolitical analysis, and the study of international and regional balances of power.
The study concludes that the war has contributed to accelerating the gradual erosion of the unipolar order and has restored the significance of geopolitics and competition over influence, energy resources, and maritime routes after decades dominated by liberal conceptions based on globalization and interdependence. The conflict has also revealed the growing roles of Russia, China, and regional powers in managing international crises, reflecting the transition of the international system toward more fluid and multipolar balances. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that the Middle East has re-emerged as one of the central arenas for the redistribution of international power due to its connection to global energy security, strategic maritime routes, and international supply chains. This has caused the U.S.–Israeli–Iranian conflict to transcend its regional boundaries and become part of the broader process of restructuring the contemporary international system. At the Libyan level, the study concludes that current international transformations have reproduced Libya’s geopolitical importance amid increasing international competition over the Mediterranean, energy resources, and the security of the African Sahel.
