The Islamic Rules of Seeking Permission in Surah An-Nur

Abstract

This study examines the Islamic rules of seeking permission in Surah An-Nur, considering seeking permission as one of the Islamic manners prescribed by Allah to protect individual privacy, safeguard the sanctity of homes, and regulate social relations within the family and society. The study aims to clarify the Islamic rulings related to seeking permission, its legal status, proper procedures, and the wisdom behind its legislation, while highlighting the concern of Islamic law with protecting privacy, preserving personal dignity, and respecting people's feelings and circumstances. The study adopts an inductive-analytical approach by examining the relevant Qur'anic verses, Prophetic traditions, and scholarly opinions concerning the issue of seeking permission, and by analyzing these sources to derive the relevant legal rulings.

The study concludes that Surah An-Nur contains a number of important legal rulings and social manners concerning seeking permission. These include seeking permission and greeting the occupants before entering homes, refraining from entering without permission, seeking permission up to three times and leaving when permission is not granted, avoiding looking inside homes, and requiring children and servants to seek permission at specific private times. The study also highlights the legitimacy of adults seeking permission before entering upon their close relatives. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that the legislation of seeking permission serves important objectives, including protecting privacy, preserving personal modesty, preventing potential causes of temptation, promoting social etiquette, and protecting the family and society from causes of moral deviation. The study emphasizes that adherence to the etiquette of seeking permission constitutes an important aspect of building a well-balanced Muslim personality and promoting positive individual and social behavior. It also highlights the continuing need to raise awareness of these Islamic principles in light of contemporary social changes
