Abstract

Sabratha city, located on the western coast of Libya, faces a severe groundwater quality crisis due to over-extraction, saltwater intrusion, and untreated sewage leakage. This review paper comprehensively analyzes all scientific studies on water quality in Sabratha, comparing raw groundwater with commercially purified drinking water. Eighteen published studies (1996-2025) were compiled, analyzed, and re-evaluated against World Health Organization (WHO) standards. Raw groundwater exhibited extremely high concentrations of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) reaching 16,510 mg/L, and nitrates (NO₃⁻) reaching 407 mg/L, far exceeding permissible limits. In contrast, commercial purification systems showed 93%efficiency in removing chemical contaminants but demonstrated bacteriological contamination (Coliform bacteria) in 20% of samples (one out of five stations). Commercial purification systems are the only currently available technical solution to the salinity crisis, but they pose a genuine epidemic risk due to the absence of health monitoring and distribution quality.
