The Impact of Digitalization on Socialization in Libyan Society

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the impact of digitalization on socialization in Libyan society by analyzing the transformations that have occurred in patterns of social interaction and sources of socialization in light of the widespread adoption of information technology and social media. The study adopted a sociological analytical approach, drawing on Symbolic Interactionism as a theoretical framework to explain how social meanings, values, and behaviors are formed through symbolic interaction, whether in direct social reality or within the digital space. The findings revealed that digitalization has contributed to reshaping the process of socialization, as traditional institutions such as the family and school are no longer the sole sources of socialization; rather, digital media have become a key actor in transmitting social values and norms, particularly among youth.

The study also found that digitalization has led to significant changes in patterns of social interaction within Libyan society, reflected in a decline in face-to-face interaction alongside the rise of digital interaction. This shift has influenced the system of social values and cultural identity, resulting in the emergence of new behavioral patterns characterized by openness to global cultures and, at times, conflict with traditional social values.
